X.500 Directory Services Related Entries Web Links New/Updated Information Note: Many topics at this site are reduced versions of the text in "The Encyclopedia of Networking and Telecommunications." Search results will not be as extensive as a search of the book's CD-ROM. X.500 is a CCITT (ITU) recommendation for a "white pages" directory services system that can provide a global "lookup" service for people and objects everywhere. The standard defines a hierarchical tree-structured directory in which countries form the top level of the directory and organizations or organizational units branch from this tree. The original intent was to define an international authority at the root of the tree that would manage the global structure.
