Storage over IP or SoIP is a technology for accessing storage devices over TCP/IP networks. Storage becomes accessible to users directly across the network, and much of the overhead imposed by server and operating system intervention is removed to improve performance. This terminology is a trademark to Nishan Systems. Since the IETF is working to standardize similar storage access technologies, it chose to use the name "IP Storage" for its Working Group and related technology.
