A proprietary technique used by Alteon Networks to expand the size of Ethernet frames from 1,500 bytes to 9,000 bytes. Jumbo frames can improve throughput on Gigabit Ethernet networks. The idea is to reduce the frame header overhead. Since Gigabit Ethernet processes many frames per second, reducing the number of headers to process and increasing the frame size gives users the benefits of higher data throughput and lower server CPU utilization, regardless of their network infrastructure.

Note that if jumbo frames cross a non-supporting router, the router will break the frames down into 1,500-byte frames.
