IPMI is a common management interface specification defined by Intel Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company, NEC Corporation, and Dell Computer Corporation. IPMI monitors the physical characteristics of equipment such as servers, switches, PBXs, and other network equipment. Monitored characteristics include temperature, voltage, fans, power supplies, and chassis. IPMI interfaces with management software running on the host processor or in other management systems. With IPMI, administrators can proactively manage equipment, monitoring for potential problems and correcting them before they turn into major problems. IPMI is designed to work on its own, even when a host processor is down.

IPMI is designed into management controllers that are embedded in computer boards and other devices. The specification is the recommended interface for CompactPCI systems.
