IGMP (Internet Group Message Protocol) Related Entries Web Links New/Updated Information Note: Many topics at this site are reduced versions of the text in "The Encyclopedia of Networking and Telecommunications." Search results will not be as extensive as a search of the book's CD-ROM. Multicast receivers must indicate their desire to be included in a multicast session. This is done with IGMP, a protocol that runs between hosts and their immediately neighboring multicast routers. Hosts use the protocol to inform the local multicast router that they want to receive transmissions from a particular multicast group, or that they no longer want to receive messages from a group.
