Multicast receivers must indicate their desire to be included in a multicast session. This is done with IGMP, a protocol that runs between hosts and their immediately neighboring multicast routers. Hosts use the protocol to inform the local multicast router that they want to receive transmissions from a particular multicast group, or that they no longer want to receive messages from a group. See "Multicasting."
