Testing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting covers a wide range of topics, including testing and certifying cable, network protocol analysis, benchmarking, performance analysis, and so on. Network technicians carry a variety of tools to troubleshoot network problems and test for compliance. See "Network Analyzers" for more information.

Network testing and diagnostics should be proactive-that is, it is extremely useful to have equipment that can monitor the condition of the network and warn you of impending problems. That is where network management systems based on SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) and RMON (Remote Monitoring) come in handy. These systems gather up and display useful information about the condition of networks and provide statistical information that can help you justify your management techniques and requirements for new equipment. See "Network Management" for more information.
