RMON is an IETF network monitoring and analysis standard similar to SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) that was developed to overcome some of the limitations of SNMP. RMON is not a replacement for SNMP. It fits into the SNMP framework as an enhanced data collection system on managed devices. The SNMP protocol may still be used to transfer information from RMON-managed devices to SNMP management stations.
